HOSPITALIZED CHILD EXPERIENCES

Children's Hospital of Philadelphia ~ Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

May 2019 to August 2019

As a practicum student, I had two rotations throughout the summer: one in inpatient Neurology and the second in outpatient Gastroenterology. I completed weekly journals that allowed me to reflect on my experiences and how they affect my future practice as a Certified Child Life Specialist. I also created, implemented, and evaluated therapeutic activities for children on the units. At the end of my practicum I hosted a special event for the families in the hospital that was informed by my rotations within Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

Johns Hopkins Children's Center ~ Baltimore, Maryland

September 2018 to Present

As a volunteer on the inpatient Oncology unit, I provided developmentally appropriate play opportunities for patients and families both bedside and in the playroom. My consistency in volunteering allowed me to  develop my long term rapport building skills. This also consisted of keeping a teen room and younger playroom clean and accessible for families to safely use.

University of Minnesota Masonic Children's Hospital ~ Minneapolis, Minnesota

September 2017 to July 2018

As a care partners volunteer on the Journey Clinic floor of the hospital, I initiated developmentally appropriate play opportunities for families and children in a fast paced waiting room. The Journey Clinic is an inpatient and outpatient clinic for Hematology and Oncology pediatric patients. My priority was facilitating play in the waiting room and building quick rapport with families and patients while they waited for their appointments. I also collaborated with pediatric staff to prepare materials for organized activities and events.

Sanford Children's Hospital ~ Fargo, North Dakota

June 2015 to September 2017

As a volunteer, I collaborated with Certified Child Life Specialists to prioritize patients based on the amount of interaction a patient had and needed that day. I would proceed to check with patients to initiate and engage in developmentally appropriate play opportunities at their bedside or in the playroom. The patient population included all pediatric ages for a general admission and the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.

Well Child Experience

Open Door Care ~ Baltimore, Maryland

September 2018 to Present

As a teacher in this before school care program, I create a comforting and engaging environment for families to drop off their child. I plan and organize a club activity that is cognitively and developmentally stimulating for a group of children between the ages of 6 and 11-years-old. I also set up breakfast in a cleanly manner and continue to actively engage the children in a conversation with their peers and teachers.

Primrose School of Minnetonka ~ Minnetonka, MN

September 2017 to July 2018

As a lead teacher in a class of 20 two and three-year-olds I communicated effectively with the other leader in the room to create a positive, learning environment for the children. I gained a greater understanding of how to adjust to group and individual needs of classroom while facilitating curriculum based activities. Enhancing and implementing curriculum based activities was a consistent part of my role as a lead teacher at Primrose.

Sanford Child Development Center ~ Fargo, North Dakota

December 2015 to August 2017

As a teacher in a preschool classroom, I worked as a part of a team to plan and implement developmentally appropriate activities. On a daily basis I led large group gross-motor activities that I consistently adapted  to actively engage the children in play. The small group activities focused on cognitive and fine motor physical development for the preschool children.

North Dakota State University Wellness Center Child Care ~ Fargo, North Dakota

September 2013 to December 2015

As a student coordinator, I organized the student employees to ensure a safe and developmentally appropriate environment for each child. At this center I cared for infants and children between the ages of six-weeks-old to six-years-old while assisting at the front desk. Consistent effective communication about care needs for the infant and child was crucial to performing well in this role.

Related Experience

Stella Maris Camp Me Too ~ Timonium , Maryland

April 2019

As a volunteer buddy, I supported school age children and adolescents experiencing grief throughout a weekend bereavement camp. There were various therapeutic activities throughout the weekend that were designed to assist the child in understanding of how to cope with the death of their loved one. As well as interacting with the adolescents in my cabin, I helped facilitate one of the group therapeutic activity stations focused on a physical release of anger.

Art with a Heart ~ Baltimore, Maryland

November 2018 to Present

As an assistant art teacher, I help facilitate an art lesson to children that are experiencing stressful situations outside of class. The lesson provides children with a therapeutic play opportunity through art materials that promotes continued normal development

Legacy Children's Foundation ~ Fargo, North Dakota

September 2013 to August 2017

As an academic coach supervisor, I assisted at-risk youth ages 12-18 in achieving their high school diploma. I managed the academic integrity of the homework site environment that the adolescents could attend on a daily basis. As an academic coach I participated in various service projects in order to build my mentor relationship, on top of the academic assistance, with the students.
